we are trying (and have been for several weeks) to rid our home and cats of fleas. on top of vacuuming almost every day, i’ve tried the holistic route using diatomaceous earth, feeding them brewer’s yeast and zinc and that has helped a little but the DE makes quite a mess through the house: it looks like a talcum powder bottle exploded! we have bathed the kittens several times in Dawn and that gets some of the fleas but not all. most websites discourage flea collars because they are just a ring of poison around your cat’s neck. but we tried them anyway. there were fleas UNDER the collars! so we broke down and bought some of this:
and guess what? it doesn’t work either. i know fleas are super bad this season but it makes me sad to see my kitties with scabby necks and being itchy and it makes me mad to spend $18 on a product that is supposed to kill fleas within 15 minutes but there are still FLEAS RIGHT WHERE THE PRODUCT WAS APPLIED! our 2 kittens are heading to the vet to be spayed/neutered on Thursday and it’s embarrassing to have to take them in with all these bugs. i guess we’ll just keep on with the DE and the vacuuming and the combing and the hand-picking (which is pretty tricky with kittens!) until we get a hard freeze and i can send them outside!
A family friend just had rather major surgery and I wanted to send along some good wishes to him while he heals.
Today is Monday and that means a fresh start! This week we plan to:
1. Assess the child’s clothing situation to see what fits, what doesn’t, what’s needed before it’s Back to School;
2. Head down to Jungle Jim’s International Market and IKEA. Not because we really need to but because it’s always fun to pick up exotic ingredients at great prices and, well, why do you need a reason to go to IKEA?;
3. Take kittens to vet for spay & neuter! Not going to be fun for anyone involved but we understand the importance of having this done!
this isn’t a note or a meal or even a craft but there are a few products i use every day that make life easier and that i completely love:
This Laid Back Dish Brush from Full Circle (mine was purchased at Earth Fare, Centerville) makes washing dishes fun and responsible! It’s composed of bamboo and the compostable plastic Bonterra. The brush heads are replaceable and the bristles are also composed of recycled materials!
This Calphalon covered frying pan is my favorite pan. (Purchased at Target) The only drawback, after a couple of years, is that the silicon handle spins around the stainless steel handle. But I still use this pan almost every day!
This Bodum coffee press! I have both the 12 oz and the 34 oz versions…the small one is for weekdays and the large one gets used on weekends or for overnight cold-brewed coffee. (I got both of mine from Target but back when they only had black!)
Love having these products to use each day!
I can’t believe I haven’t posted since September! I sort of fell off the lunchnotes wagon but hope to get back to the card crafting in the new year.

so, my awesome friend and fabulous paper-crafter, nikki gave me a web award! i’m not sure i’m deserving of it but i’ll take it anyway! nikki is the person who got me started with stamps and ink and paper and glitter and who gave me the confidence to post my cards and notes online. according to the award i am Over The Top and nikki says part of the reason is because i send a note in my daughter’s lunch every day. (i’ve been doing that since 1st grade and she’s in 5th grade now.) most of the notes aren’t really anything spectacular but my husband convinced me that i should post each day’s note. convincing my shy daughter to let me do so was a challenge and she’s still not very thrilled about it. but she said as long as i don’t share the inside, she’ll be fine with it. so if you stop by to see my notes now and again, thank you. and remember, sending a little love along with someone on even the shortest journey tells that person you’re thinking of them.
ETA: i know i need to send this along to five other wonderful crafters and do the one-word answer list thing but it will have to wait another day….i’m sort of over the top busy right now!
last week i was lucky enough to work as one of my favorite teachers. she went on a cruise and chose me to be her sub for while she was gone. i was attempting autumn colors on this card to match the flowers i gave her. didn’t quite get there!
this is the note book i made for the week i worked. the week ended with the class halloween parties so i thought a pumpkin would be cute.
and this is what happens when your photo set is in the same place as the cat’s favorite bird-watching window:
i do have one lunch note to share for the week but won’t be able to until tomorrow or saturday. i’ve been selling books all week at the school book fair. the lunch note is a book (fitting, yes?) and the last page will get written on friday!
the card i got from sophie and mike on saturday morning (her concept, his execution mostly but she helped):
the cloud oval is the earth, the buttons are the planets, the chalked embossed dots are the stars. the sentiment read “hope your birthday is out of this world” and sophie also wrote, “you are a star to me!”
my husband bought me nike frees!:
they are so light and comfortable!
and i picked out this necklace, “It Fell From A Tree,” from luli at etsy (luli designs).
i LOVE it. she has some really beautiful jewelry and the shipping only took 5 days from vancouver!
the whole day was wonderful. from the cards to the gifts to lunch at the meadowlark to my cheer squad singing happy birthday to me on the sidelines of the football game to festival-food dinner from the pretzel festival.
